Grazie agli archivi della Società Astronomica Ticinese ho potuto sfogliare di recente “Terra Luna Anno 1” di G. Righini e G. Masini, un libro italiano dedicato alle missioni lunari e stampato a settembre del 1969, solo due mesi dopo il primo sbarco sulla Luna, dall'editore Arnoldo Mondadori. Fra le tante illustrazioni a colori del libro ne spicca una a pagina 21, mostrata qui sotto.

Anche un occhio non particolarmente esperto nota che alcuni dettagli dell'astronauta sono chiaramente disegnati. L'impressione immediata è che la foto sia un falso. Nel libro, però, viene descritta come se fosse una fotografia autentica di Buzz Aldrin che "ha appena deposto il riflettore laser che servirà per misurare l'esatta distanza Terra-Luna" .

Se Mondadori pubblicava foto ritoccate di questo genere nei libri che parlavano di imprese lunari, non c'è troppo da stupirsi se poi alcuni lettori dubitarono che le immagini fossero autentiche e quindi sospettarono che l'intero progetto lunare fosse una messinscena.

Today, with the abundance of material available and scans high quality of all pictures, this excuse is no longer acceptable.
